AI skills: Step by step

Teach your AI assistant how to prepare your retrospectives from your team's morale.

1 What a skill is

A skill teaches your AI assistant a method: how to prepare a retrospective, how to turn complaints into action items. You install it once; the assistant uses it when your request calls for it.

The analysis is done by your assistant: SmileAgile provides the data, aggregated and anonymous.

SkillWhat it does
smileagile-mcp-orchestratorFetches your teams' data from SmileAgile's MCP server: which tools, in which order, and their rules.
agile-retrospective-scriptingA minute-by-minute retrospective script, its tone tuned to the morale.
smart-action-item-generatorVague complaints turned into 2 or 3 SMART experiments for the next sprint.
elephants-in-the-room-detectorThe tensions nobody names in the comments, framed as safe questions for the retrospective.

2 Download the skills

All the skills at once, each in its own folder:

Download the skills

Or one skill at a time (Claude takes one skill per zip):

Each release brings the skills up to date: download them again after a new version (What's new).

The address of all the skills, for a script or a link:

https://www.smileagile.io/skills.zip

3 Install them

Claude Code

In a terminal: download the skills and unzip them in your skills folder, for all your projects:

curl -L -o smileagile-skills.zip https://www.smileagile.io/skills.zip
unzip -o smileagile-skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills

For one project only, unzip them in its .claude/skills folder instead. A new Claude Code session picks them up.

claude.ai, Claude Desktop

  1. Download the skills one at a time (above): Claude takes one skill per zip.
  2. In Claude: Settings, Capabilities, Skills, Upload skill, then choose a skill's zip. Do it for each skill.
  3. Turn the skills on. If Claude asks for it, turn on code execution too, on the same page.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner may have to allow the skills first.

Other AI assistants

Many AI assistants read the same skills format (a folder holding a SKILL.md file): unzip the skills where their documentation says.

An assistant without skills: open a skill's SKILL.md (a text file), and paste its content at the start of your conversation, as instructions.

4 Use them

Ask in your own words: the assistant picks the skill matching your request. F.e.:

  • Prepare a 45-minute retrospective for the team Phoenix, from its last survey. agile-retrospective-scripting
  • Turn the complaints of Phoenix's last sprint into action items for the next one. smart-action-item-generator
  • Is there something the team Phoenix doesn't dare to say? elephants-in-the-room-detector

To be sure a skill is used, name it, f.e.: Use the skill agile-retrospective-scripting for Phoenix.

What It Looks Like

Example: the demo team Phoenix
Prepare a 45-minute retrospective for the team Phoenix, from its last survey.
  • Morale: 4.25 out of 5 (8 votes), up from 3.0 the sprint before: an energetic tone, celebrating the wins.
  • Themes from the comments: fewer interruptions, the pairing with the new joiner, the release shipped a day early.
  • The agenda: set the stage (5 min), gather data (10), generate insights (12), decide what to do (13), close (5), with the facilitator's talking points.
  • An experiment to keep: protect a focus time each day, as this sprint did; checked at the next retrospective.

Without the MCP server

Paste the data with your request, f.e.:

Prepare my retrospective. Morale: 3.2 out of 5, down from 3.9. The comments: ...

Copy the comments from the team's comments page in SmileAgile: they are listed by score, never in the order of the votes.

5 Privacy

  • The skills keep SmileAgile's rules: the results are aggregated, and never try to guess who wrote a comment.
  • The comments are written by the voters: the skills treat them as text to analyze, never as instructions.
  • A skill runs in your AI assistant: what happens to the data depends on its provider, check its privacy settings.
  • With the MCP server, each read of the comments is logged, as for any AI assistant.

6 Troubleshooting

  • The skill isn't used: Name it in your request; in Claude Code, start a new session after installing it.
  • Claude refuses the zip: Upload one skill's zip, not the one with all the skills.
  • No data: Connect your assistant to SmileAgile, or paste the morale and the comments in the conversation.
  • No comments: A survey's comments are readable once it is closed.
