AI assistants (MCP) step by step

1/ What an AI assistant can do

SmileAgile has an MCP server: an AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor...) can read the morale of your teams and help you prepare retrospectives, health checks and reports.

It sees exactly what you see in SmileAgile, with your permissions, and nothing more.

What it can't do, on purpose

  • Vote: the votes must come from people.
  • See who voted what: the results are always aggregated.
  • Delete a team, a survey or an organization, or change the account settings.
2/ Create a token

For Claude Code, Cursor and the other tools installed on your computer: a personal access token. My Profile, AI assistants (MCP):

  1. Name it after the tool and the device, f.e. Claude Code on my laptop.
  2. Choose its access: Read only, or Read and write to also create, close and reopen surveys and publish chart links.
  3. Choose its expiration: 30 days, 90 days or 1 year.
  4. Copy it right away: it is shown only once.

Treat a token like a password: anyone who has it can read your teams' data.

You can revoke a token at any time in My Profile: the AI assistants using it lose their access at once.

claude.ai and the other web connectors don't need a token: they ask for your consent instead (next step).

3/ Connect your AI assistant

The address of the MCP server: https://www.smileagile.io/mcp

Claude Code

In a terminal, with your token instead of sa_...:

claude mcp add --transport http smileagile https://www.smileagile.io/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer sa_..."

Then, in a new session, /mcp shows smileagile as connected.

Cursor

In the file ~/.cursor/mcp.json, with your token instead of sa_...:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "smileagile": {
      "url": "https://www.smileagile.io/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer sa_..." }
    }
  }
}

claude.ai, Claude Desktop

No token to copy: Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, with the address of the MCP server.

SmileAgile asks you to log in, then shows what the assistant will be able to do: allow it, and also allow changes if you want it to create or close surveys.

The access then appears in My Profile as Connected (OAuth), where you can revoke it.

Other AI assistants

Any client supporting remote MCP servers (Streamable HTTP) works: with a personal access token in the Authorization header, or with OAuth.

4/ What to ask

Ask in your own words, f.e.:

  • How is the morale of my teams this month?
  • Prepare my next retrospective for the team Avengers.
  • Which teams of my organization should I watch?
  • Create the survey of this sprint and give me the link to share.

Tools

Read: the teams, the surveys, their aggregated results, the morale trend, the participation of an open survey, the organizations, and the comments of a closed survey.

Write, with a Read and write access: create, close and reopen a survey, publish or revoke a team's chart link. The assistant asks you before changing anything.

Prompts

Ready-made requests: Prepare my retrospective, Sprint health check, Organization report. In Claude Code, f.e.: /mcp__smileagile__prepare_retrospective Avengers

5/ A sprint with your AI assistant

From the survey to the retrospective, f.e. for the team Avengers, with a Read and write access:

  1. Before the end of the sprint, check that no survey is open yet:
    Is there an open survey for my teams?
  2. Open the survey and invite the team:
    Open the survey of this sprint for Avengers, and write an email inviting the team to vote.
    SmileAgile doesn't send the email: your teammates' addresses are not shared with the assistant. It writes the email for you to send, or sends it with its own email connector (Gmail, Outlook...) if you connected one.
  3. Two days, then one day before the retrospective, check the participation:
    Our retrospective is on Thursday: how many people have voted for Avengers? If it's below usual, write a reminder.
    The assistant doesn't act by itself: ask it on those days, or schedule it if your assistant can, f.e. a scheduled task in Claude Code. The Sprint health check prompt does this check too.
  4. On the day, close the survey and prepare the retrospective:
    Close the Avengers survey and prepare my retrospective, with the chart.
    The assistant asks you before closing the survey. The comments become readable once it is closed: the Prepare my retrospective prompt then suggests topics to raise and a format.
6/ Privacy and security
  • The results are aggregated: never who voted what, also for the comments.
  • The comments are written by the voters: the assistant gets them as text to analyze, never as instructions.
  • Each read of the comments and each change is logged.
  • The voters are told, on the vote page, that their comments may be analyzed with AI tools.
  • What the assistant does with the data depends on its provider: check its privacy settings.
7/ Troubleshooting
  • 401 The token is wrong, revoked or expired: create a new one.
  • 403 Your account needs to own a team or an organization.
  • 429 Too many requests (120 per minute per token): wait a minute.
  • MCP server smileagile already exists in local config Claude Code already has a server with this name, f.e. with an older token: remove it first, then add it again. Use the name given to claude mcp add, f.e. smileagile-dev for a test server.
    claude mcp remove smileagile
